
NOVA SCOTIA ASSOCIATION OF ARCHITECTS75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONSThe Nova Scotia Association of Architects (NSAA), which was incorporated in 1932, is pleased to announce its 75th anniversary. To celebrate this important milestone, the NSAA is planning a number of festivities that will honour the profession’s contributions of the past, its prosperity in the present, and its aspirations for the future. Many events will be open to the public and will take place at the new Seaport district (Pier 21) along the Halifax waterfront. Events will include a public lecture series that will provide an exceptional array of speakers, as well as a variety of exhibits and special events. The NSAA is honoured to have reached this milestone and acknowledges the contributions of its members, affiliates and companions that have helped us to attain our successes over the years. MR. RAYMOND MORIYAMA7:00 pm, Thursday, May 17 at Pier 21 Heritage HallRaymond Moriyama is one of Canada’s most respected architects. Among his award-winning projects are the Ontario Science Centre, Science North in Sudbury, Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, Bata Shoe Museum; the Saudi Arabian National Museum in Riyadh; and more recently, the new Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. Since founding his firm in 1958 he has received many personal honours including the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Medal; the International Fellowship of Royal Institute of British Architects; the Honourary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects; Maclean’s Honour Roll as a Canadian Who Made the Difference; and ten honourary doctorates. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, Fellow of Royal Society of the Arts (England) and Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and has received the Order of Ontario and the Order of Rising Sun Gold Rays with Rosette, Japan. HERB STOVEL7:00 pm, Wednesday, May 23 at Pier 21 Exhibition SpaceProfessor Stovel is widely acknowledged to be one of the foremost international experts in the architectural and urban conservation field. He has contributed to more than 800 books, articles, editorials, and reports covering various facets of heritage conservation. In his various roles, he has managed 35 historic properties owned by the Ontario Heritage Foundation; acted as Director of Education for Heritage Canada; directed the University of Montreal’s post-graduate conservation program; acted as Director of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property; and provided consultation to UNESCO and the World Heritage Committee on the management of heritage sites. His research focuses on threats to global security in the 21st century and on how societies adapt to complex economic, ecological and technological change. He is the author of the #1 best-seller, The Ingenuity Gap, which won the 2001 Governor General’s award for non-fiction. His latest book, The Upside of Down: Catastrophe, Creativity, and the Renewal of Civilization, went immediately to #1 on the Macleans non-fiction bestseller list in Canada. DESIGN CHARRETTESMay 1 – 31, Pier 21 Exhibition SpaceA series of afternoon Design Workshops will take place throughout the month of May. Teams comprised of architects, interns, students, educators, professionals, designers and the public will develop urban design propositions for specific areas within Halifax, working within the framework of the ongoing ‘HRM By Design’ project. Through a collaborative approach, teams will propose design solutions for the city that will go on display at Pier 21. Each subsequent Workshop will build upon the designs of the previous teams. Through this evolutionary process, creative and informative ideas will be sure to emerge that will provide enlightened images on the potential of Halifax. Public welcome, free admission. |
